Burning Man 1996: Art Cars

These are just some of the many gas-powered monsters that drove across the playa day and night. Some had under-engine black lights, for that especially eerie glow. Others were crafted in the image of a hammerhead shark, others were festooned with religious items (no epoxy was spared). Too many people didn't realize that driving over 10 miles per hour raised the dust, making it annoying for others in and around the camps.

I don't know why this "Barney Boat" looks so funny; it seems I may have rotated the picture and introduced graphic artifacts (the jaggies).

The Bug Van. I thought this one was inspired. The bug is made of an actual VW Bug, sans wheels.

Not everything was a car, or based on a car body. Here's one of the landsailers, beloved by their drivers but loathed by pretty much everyone else. Too fast with too little control for Black Rock City.

A scooter turned into a wolf, complete with rubber chicken in its teeth.

And of course some "art cars" aren't arty at all, but merely a stroking of the owner's ego. This thing sports a commercial light bar and a shark fin thing. Belongs on a beach, somewhere (else).
