Burning Man 1996: Black Rock City
At the center of Black Rock City is McSatan's (or is it McSatans?) hamburger emporium. Vending was allowed, even encouraged, in 1996. There was no more relaxing place in BRC than at McSatans, with wrought-iron animal sculptures belching propane blasts at your feet, sitting in a lawn chair, enjoying a hot cheeseburger and cold beer served to you by bikers cooking over some 55-gallon oil drums cut in half lengthwise. The high point of Burning Man :-)
Here's the Atomic Café, with the seemingly ever-present line of participants looking for a dose of caffèine.
An Indian decoration on the façade of the chai tent. The Nub Chai people were testing batches of their product, in preparation for going public with their refreshing brew. (I'm not completely sure about the pedantic distinctions, but I think it might be that they're serving Marsala tea rather than chai.)
The interior of Club Ephemera, deserted and quiet during the day. A wonderful place to stop by while on patrol.
The headquarters of 99.5 FM, one of the radio stations at the event. One of the few regrets I have over these years is not being able to have recorded the wonderful music and even better chatter going on.
Of course Black Rock City had its own Stonehenge!
A mailbox. There's a long and glorious history of mail and parcel delivery at Burning Man. Where they've gotten the mailboxs from I don't know.
The really nice folks at the Cyberbuss (note the URL) were always open with shade, drinks, etc.
The crowds at the information board seems never to abate. Everyone is hoping for a connection.
This couple had a land usage display outside and inside their van. Not your usual participants. They really cared about the care and feeding of the Earth.
The iStorm bus (note the URL and media services). These guys were handing out pocket protectors with the iStorm guy.
The aforementioned geekware.
The Piss Clear newspaper delivery girl.
One of the great cultural recycling seen at Burning Man is the adaptation of national costume to our hot desert environment. This hat from Viet Nam seems pretty cool.
Pierced participant pauses at the information boards.
