2005-01 Gran Canaria: A Maspalomas New Years Day

Saturday 1 January 2005

The kids are very slow to wake, probably because of the very late dinner and the midnight interruption.

And they wake very hungry. Beverly told us that Finnegan's is closed today, and Paddy Murphy's won't upon until 13.00. So we go next door to Paddy's; the closed green doors can be seen in the background.

Lila found the party hat, and both kids collected lots of paper streamers from last night's festivities.

They even found paper leis.

We decide to head over to Maspalomas by bus. Lila decides she wants to climb all over the bus shelter whilst waiting. She's really physically aggressive when tackling this sort of thing.

Probably because Isaac presets such an example. Just before we went on this trip we spent an evening at our synagogue, where our kids were the only ones - of kids from 3 to 13 - who were able to scale a climbing structure with the ladder removed.

Lila really loves playing in the tidepools. We find all sorts of shells and fun rocks. But the water isn't warm, so we're always moving, running in and out of the surf.

This day Isaac stayed out of the water altogether, preferring to make sand castles in the surf or digging holes with other kids. Lila thought this was very funny.

The exertion drives us to the promenade, to the Restaurante Las Escaleritas (which in German is Zum Treppchen). This advertisment for the restaurant has been around for oh, so many years.

The kids have their routine down: pizza or spaghetti and some of our seafood or paella.

Here I am, stag, whilst Rose takes the kids to the bathroom before we head onward. I am enjoying the complimentary ron miel (honey rum).

We take the bus back to Playa del Inglés. Rose prefers the front of the bus, it not being her favorite mode of locomotion. The kids, of course, demand the back of the bus.

All in all a quiet New Years day in the tropics. I'm pretty happy with how it turned out.
