2004-12 Gran Canaria: Isaac's Sixth Birthday

Sunday 19 December 2004

Isaac awoke a six-year-old. Happy birthday, my big boy!

Back in San Francisco he'd made up some posters to celebrate the day; here you see him adjusting one of the many which hang around the apartment.

My darling wife carried presents from our relatives stateside with us. Here Isaac examines one of them with glee.

You can see he's not a bit dissapointed with this one! What a grin!

Little sister Lila is glowing with a pride of ownership of her own gift. (We've always made it a family policy to bring siblings something when we're invited to a birthday party.) I love a good brotherly hug. It's better than vexation.

Here I am explaining something to the kids about the gifts laid out for Isaac (and Lila). It probably has something to do with the German kinderchocolate sitting on the table closest to me. Lila is generally happy to eat her own weight in sweets. Not that Isaac is shy about confectionaries...

Best is when the kids support each other. I'm not sure what's going on here, but I suspect it's a discussion about gift protocol. Here Isaac is wearing his Münster sport jacket, a gift of note from Omi Marga. Isaac was also impressed with the birthday card and balloon attached to the gift.

Lila was very, very satisfied with her gift of a pink purse. (Most of Lila's gifts were pink, as is her wont.)

The gifts opened, the paper gleefully shredded, we retire to a much-needed lunch. The woman at right is Omi's long-time house-helper, Gerti. Gerti has been absolutely wonderful to us, as she has always been. She's leaving on Monday, and we're sad to see her go.

A post-lunch line-up of the generations: great-grandmother, mother, and daughter. Lila models her new pink socks, new pink skirt, new pink heart-shaped belt, new pink purse, and new pink rhinestone shirt. She's, umm, tickled pink.

Do I really look that serious? Here I'm putting pink doll här-gummies into Lila's pig-tails.

Now it's time to get outdoors, to let the kids burn off some of that excess energy. Perhaps the Playa del Inglés beach?
