2004-12 Gran Canaria: Faro de Maspalomas

Saturday 18 December 2004

Morningtime. Breakfast preparations. Isaac gets to put brodchen into the hot stove after Omi Marga slices them.

Lila and her tongue concentrate on squeezing the oranges.

I have no idea why Gerti is putting Lila's pink cloth bear on Omi Marga whilst Omi is trying to read the labels for the different kinds of Japenese soups we've brought from San Francisco.

Isaac shows off the school photo which he's gifted to Omi; the same photo which appears in his brand-new passport.

Here's Lila (standing), Isaac (sitting), and Rose (hugging her backpack) waiting at the C. C. Yumbo bus stop. We're heading to Maspalomas beach.

In the first row behind the driver, Isaac says he'll be Lila's seat belt. She's pointing out the digital clock, I think.

Right by the faro (lighthouse) we discover the next step up from the sand sculptures of years past: a person covered in sand. Here Lila is giving him a few coins; she got a few rocks in exchange.

Here we were having a Burning Man moment, picking up some of the M. O. O. P. (Matter Out Of Place) we saw littering the beach. That bag has at least two kilos worth of plastic bags, metal cans, and other plastic or glass debris. It's disheartening to see how many tourists just step over the garbage, rather than picking something up, even when their own kids are playing right there.

My reward for putting M. O. O. P. in its place was to see this beautiful shell. Inside we found a tiny albino crab and an invertibrate opening and closing the shell. When we realized it was inhabited I took it out as far as I could and placed it into what seemed like a nice safe place.

Having done two good deeds, we retire to the Restaurante Las Escaleritas, seen here in panorama.

The kids split a pizza margherita and a few slices of tomato, Rose enjoys the chippirones (which the kids call "squidwards"), and dig into the paella mariscos.

Lila shows off her zest (for local food, I guess).

I wanted to get into the picture. I'm happy to be here...

...especially when a carajillo (local espresso with cognac) arrives.

We stroll to the end of the Maspalomas promenade, past the kids play area (san climbing structure), to the ecological preserve. Because of the week of rain before our trip, the water extends well past the blue rope enclosure.

Here I am, wading in the overflow, taking a photo of Rose.

As we wait for the autobus back to Playa del Inglés, Lila falls asleep in her stroller.
