2003 Gran Canaria: Visiting the Medico

Monday 13 January 2003

Last night we unloaded our pile of goodies, some of which was requested by Omi Marga, the rest was stuff we knew she'd like. Organic dried pineapples, raw macadamia nuts, unsalted toasted macadamia nuts, California rice trilogy (with barley), a wild rice trilogy, roasted edamame, Turkish coffee with cardomom, Arabic tea with cardomom, shiro miso soup, chocolate macadamia coffee from Hawai'i, 100 grams of ground cardomom, 50 grams of organic ground cardomom, curry meat mix, and more.

Lila seemed to be doing better, so we started the day by clearing our haul off Omi's table and starting on making breakfast. Isaac made freshly-squeezed orange juice for the very first time. Between the percolating coffee pot and the wall lies the squeezer; Isaac and Oma did a good job of cooperating.

On the way to the doctor's office we come across city workers taking down the Christmas decorations. Rose calls these "grapes", but I'm pretty sure that it's a pointsettia.

Lila's fever is up, but the doctor checks her ears (by palpating) and declares that it's a tourist visa and prescribes ibuprophen against fever and discomfort. Lila's fever breaks and the whole thing seems forgotten. We've been keeping close tabs on her, but all seems fine.

After the medical visit, a jaunt across the street to the farmacia, we spend some quality time at the Yumbo Centrum playground. It, like much in the Yumbo, is only partially maintained. The see-saw needs a second seat and someone needs to rake the shards of broken beer bottles out of the sand. With shoes, though, it's more than just servicable. The kids love it.

Here's a panoramic (thumbnail) taken from the playground.

There's an upside to the occaisional rain-storm: rainbows.

Another attraction of the Yumbo Centrum are the arcades. Both Isaac and Lila like the mechanical cars, helicopters, horses, etc. Isaac is getting pretty good at asking for half-euros.

Here's a family portrait at the arcade. There's a rainbow in the background, but it's hard to see in this exposure.

They're thinking ahead: here is the girls club surrounded by the palm trees which'll delight the next generations. Perhaps Lila will return here with her (grand)child(ren) and recreate this photograph...

A last panorama for the day: the Yumbo Centrum seen from behind the airplane mounted on the south wall. It hasn't been kept up, and is disintegrating, but is still imposing. I hope they fix it up.

Tomorrow will be a hair-raising day for Isaac.
