Canary Islands Off the western edge of the African Sahara lie a small chain of islands. The Canary Islands are a long-time haunt of our family. My uncle Daniel sailed his boat to Gran Canaria in the 1970s and acquired a place there. The rest of the family followed. Many of my childhood summer vacations and not a few winter vacations were spent in Playa del Inglés.
In later years a webcam was mounted at Maspalomas, and later at Playa del Inglés. Then it was easy to peer into the beach from a vantage point along one of my favorite walking trails. So even when I'm here (wherever "here" might be at any given moment) I can take a moment and look out over the sand dunes and remember the warm air, choppy breeze, and comfortable tourist atmosphere. What a pleasure.
