2002 Colorado: Seven Falls' Native American dancers

Monday 8 July 2002, continued

I've seen Native American dancers at tribal competitions in Tucson, Arizona. They've all been adults, or minors under the close supervision of adults.

This was completly different. There was what we thought was a young teen (prehaps an older pre-teen) who was the emcee and dancer.

But what really made us all a bit uncomfortable was the very young girls who were doing other dances. I felt as though we were watching a begging shool. When would these little ones be sent out to malls on their own? The whole thing lacked the dignity that I've come to expect from Native Americans showcasing their arts and history.

The youngest dancer was just wonderful, but at this point I was so uncomfortable being a tourist in this circumstance that I was happy to move on.

Lunch at the Broadmoor Hotel follows.
