Canary Islands

Off the western edge of the African Sahara lie a small chain of islands. The Canary Islands are a long-time haunt of our family. My uncle Daniel sailed his boat to Gran Canaria in the 1970s and acquired a place there. The rest of the family followed. Many of my childhood summer vacations and not a few winter vacations were spent in Playa del Inglés.

As an adult I've returned as single and as a man married with children (several times; please use the navigation links at left to pick a travelogue).

It's said you can't go home again, but you can stop by and have a paella and a warm cola, which is kind of rewarding in its own right.

When these pages were first posted to the Internet, in 1995, the whole activity of creating web pages and uploading them in a remote location was a great novelty. (And, what with Telefonica's single router and terrible phone wiring throughout the entire country, any modem use in Spain qualified as remote in probability and location :-)

In later years a webcam was mounted at Maspalomas, and later at Playa del Inglés. Then it was easy to peer into the beach from a vantage point along one of my favorite walking trails. So even when I'm here (wherever "here" might be at any given moment) I can take a moment and look out over the sand dunes and remember the warm air, choppy breeze, and comfortable tourist atmosphere. What a pleasure.

Have you found errors nontrivial or marginal, factual, analytical and illogical, arithmetical, temporal, or even typographical? Please let me know; drop me email. Thanks!
