1995 Eivissa and Gran Canaria
Update: Please check my main Canary Islands page to see travelogues for other Gran Canaria trips.
In 1995 I was writing a book in The People's Café in San Francisco when the late, great Jerry Garcia of the Grateful Dead died. The Haight-Ashbury, where I was living at the time, was overrun by masses of unruly, smelly deadheads. (I mean, I thought my hygiene was lax in those years... :-)
It became impossible for me to continue writing. So I phoned my uncle and my grandmother, and in a few hours I had tickets in hand. I'd visit him for the first half of the trip in the Mediterranean, on the island of Eivissa (known as 'Ibiza' during the unhappy period of Franco's reign), part of the Islas Beleares. Then I'd move on to grandma's place on the island of Gran Canaria in the Canary Islands, 100 km off the coast of the Western Sahara. I'd return to San Francisco after 91 days on the road.
Here are my trip report links for the 1995 trip, superimposed over a calender.
