Lefty across America: 2003 - 02 - 03 (7)

February 10-11 -- Santa Cruz to Big Sur, CA

One thing about having to return to San Francisco was that it allowed me then to take one of my favorites routes southward. I would now travel down Highway 1, alongside the Pacific Ocean, to Los Angeles where I planned to stay a day or two with relatives. Remember to keep your eyes on the road!

Around the Monterrey Peninsula, I searched out Mission Carmel-by-the-Sea. It is one of the dozen or so California Missions established by Father Junipero Serra in the late-18th century. The padre is actually buried in the altar area in the church.

I continued my drive south on Highway 1 and into Big Sur country.

Before I explored the Redwoods in Big Sur Pfeiffer State Park, I had the park ranger take a picture of me mailing my important February bills. This spelled R-E-L-I-E-F !! And it was at this momentous occasion that I finally felt like I was free to leave & travel on this trip. So I thought it warranted a photo op.

Here's a picture that might come out dark, but shows beautiful sunrays escaping through the cloudy sky and reaching the calm, subdued Pacific. I waited for the chorus of angels to start singing, but they didn't (this time).

Big Sur offers some of the most dramatic seascapes to be found. The Santa Lucia Mountains rise high right at the ocean, and drop down almost like cliffs into the sea.

This picture was also taken looking south, not of dramatic cliffsides so much as interesting seastacks; rock outcroppings near the surf's edge. It's hard not to feel like everything's just slipping into the ocean.

The Big Sur coastline is dotted with many secluded, enchanting coves, surrounded by beautiful, blue surf. Nature showing her beauty stripes.

(Continue along with Lefty as he gets ready to cross our fair country. Enjoy.)
