2004-02 Gran Canaria: Los Guanches Norteños

Thursday 12 February 2004

Who should arrive just after we finish breakfast but Charlie (pronounced Shahr-lee). We haven't seen him since our trip through the Rhine and Mosul valleys, last year in Germany. He and his wife, Gisela, live near-by at the Lena Mar. He's brought by some freshly-cut bougainvilla, which pleases Omi Marga.

I need to pick up some current information about what's going on this month, so we walk around the corner to the tourist information bureau at the C. C. Yumbo". Here are the kids in a moment of quiet calm, posing by the dripping fountain.

We take the bus back to Maspalomas beach, by the lighthouse. (This was my favorite beach when I was a child. The low-tide pools of warm water, the high-tide pounding surf, and the near-by fun food.) Here's Lila playing with her toys, in the sand. She eschews the cold ocean water.

Isaac, on the other hand, absolutely loves the water. Here he's befriended a pair of Norwegian siblings. They play for two or three hours in the surf. Not one word passes between them, but then again, none are needed.

I spent a good amount of the afternoon lifeguarding the three surf-rats, and in thanks they give us their big inflatables. They're returning home tomorrow, to -17° C (1° F), says their father. He doesn't sound too happy about it.

Omi Marga does fresh fish for dinner. Lila sees Isaac taking photos with my camera and demands to do the same. Here's one of her efforts.

The kids are tired, but not too tired. So we head over to the Café de Paris, in the C. C. Yumbo". Omi's tipped us off that Los Guanches Norteños are playing tonight. I've been a fan of theirs since I {glossSub("1995 Gran Canaria: Los Guanches Norteños", "first saw them in 1995)}. Both kids are enjoying the music; Lila sways, claps, and dances along. She's directed all of us exactly how we must applaud.

In closing, here's a panorama of the view from my seat.

Tomorrow Lila will be two-and-a-half years old. Join us as we celebrate.
