2000 Italia: Cast of Characters

These are the folks you'll be meeting during this travelogue. Three of us are regulars, three are probably new to you.

My name is Michael. I'm your webmaster, author, narrator, photographer, etc. At the time of this trip I'm 36 years old. This is a pleasure trip, a last-minute replacement vacation for a planned trip to Jerusalem, which we abandoned when the Israelis and Palestinians couldn't keep the peace. This photograph was taken on top of the Hotel Campo dé Fiori, during a cold spell in Rome. It was unseasonably warm for most of our trip; mostly tee-shirt and light pants weather.

My wife Rose and I were married almost three years when we took this trip. She had briefly been in Rome before, but somehow missed the Pantheon. Roma is a sophisticated urban experience, in a location steeped in history and architecture which survives from many historical periods. What a difference from the Italian Alps, which are dominated by the magnificent peaks and glaciers (as we found out during our 1998 trip to the alpine ski resort town of Cortina d'Ampezzo). In Rome my Rose would recommend that you try the Fiori de Zucca (fried breaded zucchini flowers).

My son Isaac was 23 months old during this trip. He loved Italian; he learned to say and understand "guardia la maccina/motorino" (watch out for the car/scooter), "chow bella" (hello beautiful), "buon guorno" and "buona sierra" (good morning and good evening). In his own words he liked "ice cream cone" (although it was usually gelatto) and to "jump in the water" (thank goodness we bought him GoreTex-lined boots before we took this trip).

Devin McKinney, a co-worker of mine at GO, decided three months ago to relocate to Rome. When we realized that the strife in the Middle East made it unpalatable to take Isaac to the digs we'd rented in Jerusalem's old city I called Devin (in the middle of the night) and thirty-six hours later we were sharing a caffè macciato caldo in the piazza Campo dé Fiori. Devin is a fun guy, a web geek, and full of knowledge of the Roman customs, destinations, and eating habits. It was a pleasure spending time with him again.

Cicki, pronounced "ki-ki", a nineteen-year-old Swede, worked at Heartbreak (a restaurant/bar in Campo dé Fiori). She's a friend of Devin's. When he saw how used up we were from our recent trip to West Palm Beach, Florida, he suggested using her as an au pair. We hired her to be an extra pair of eyes, arms, and legs. She went everywhere with us, from morning to evening, and watched out for Isaac. In the beginning of her employ, Rose would nervously watch as Cicki took over. At the end Cicki would nervously look around when Rose ran around with Isaac. It was great having an extra person, and Cicki is very pleasant in her own right.

Rebecca, pronounced "re-be-KAH", was another nineteen-year-old Swede. A roommate of Cicki and another worker at Heartbreak, our paths crossed repeatedly. She went out with us occasionally, so you'll see her in some photos.
