Burning Man 2000 San Francisco to Reno

Instead of sleeping in, as hoped for, Isaac has us up at 06:30. I let Rose sleep; Isaac and I go for a stroll around the Castro and have breakfast at Orphan Andy's. Isaac loves watching the restored trolley cars go by. We return at 09:00 and I have my toiletries and tech bag packed by 10:00. Then we wait for Ranger Lefty.

It's 11:30 and Ranger Lefty isn't here yet. He's probably doing some last-minute shopping. Oh, here he is.

I rearrange Ranger Lefty's bags so that the sleeping bags, tents, and camp supplies are at the front of the cab, clothes and other supplies in the middle, and food storage and ranger needs are at the back, at hand for food shopping and use once we arrive on the playa. My bags follow the same pattern, and by the time we're done it's even possible to use the rearview mirror. Joy.

After packing my things we close the rear door, attach the bike rack, load on my bicycle, and jump in to head to Ranger Lefty's place for his bicycle. We load his on the rack, use another flexible lock to hold it on, and we're done.

We jump in, turn on the stereo, and head downtown, through Civic Center (the newly-refurbished City Hall appears above), by the Main Library (below), and onto the Central Freeway, on our way to the San Francisco Oakland Bay Bridge.

Traffic is light in the city; 11:45 on a Sunday seems to be a good time to get underway. By noon we're on the bridge. (That's Yahoo's retro advertisment at right.)

Traffic isn't so light as we got to the bridge itself. Meh, so it goes. (There's a Ruby iMac billboard.)

As soon as we squeeze through the merging lanes (no reason for the congestion, of course) things open up and all we see is open road. Go!

Let's get to Reno, okay?
