1999 Austria / London / Munich: Mosshammer

On the way to Moßhammer we passed the Café Hotel Seehof, which struck me as an interesting bit of architecture. I'm sorry the photo isn't clearer (I took it while driving and didn't have time to tweak the settings).

We arrived and parked on the outskirts (any excuse to get out of the car and see things on foot).

In the middle of town is the church. The tower dates back from 1309. No remains of the cloisters which existed from 740 to 1215 can be found.

It's always amazingly difficult to take photos of the insides of churches; this will have to suffice.

Lining the walls are plaques dating back to the middle ages. Some have cherubim looking down from Heaven, others show the denizens of Hell. One includes a knight (with helmet on the ground next to him) praying on bended knee.

We took a stroll around the church. The foundations on the town side aren't visible, but the exposed side clearly shows its age. Very impressive.

In the walls of the buildings around the church we found old doors and gravestones. The images of the deceased are moving, faces from the past looking at us.

We went back to the middle of town, to check out the more recent buildings. Right next to the church is Konditorei Café Moßhammer, which holds a good reputation. The desserts on display in the window looked great, but our lunch at the Zell am Sea Grand Hotel was too recent.

It's always a pleasure to see support of Apple computers. (During my 1995 trip to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria I found a tiny shop, the staff of which were very helpful in getting my misbehaving PowerBook up and running (although I did wind up with a Spanish version of the operating system.)

We drove home; Isaac crashed in the bright sunlight. My Burning Man Ranger hat came to the rescue (thanks to Mom).

Next, we visit Salzburg.
