Burning Man 1996: In The Air
One of the cool things about our Black Rock City infrastructure is our airport. We have a fully-functioning airfield with a control tower (actually a card table) staffed by other pilots.
Here's a Piper - much like the one I used to fly with Dziadziu - landing on the soft playa surface.
A blue Cessna next to the now-landed Piper. People camped right near their planes, which was convenient but dusty once the props are started.
Some people had their tents under their planes.
Some people omitted the tent entirely and just slept in a sleeping bag under their beloved plane.
Here's an unexpected sight: a helicopter coming in for a landing just behind Merchant Camp. What's that all about?
Well, 1996 had a rather unhealthy number of drug overdoses. If memory serves this was an air ambulance extracting a participant in the throes of a heroin overdose.
Almost on the helipad. Through the Ranger radio channel I heard bits and pieces of the goings-on, but not what was on the Medical and Law Enforcement channels.
A short while later the patient was aboard. The rest of these pictures show what the air ambulance did to our environment as it flew its rescue mission. This is the point when the rotors started turning.
Moments later the rotor wash displaced - in a surprisingly large radius - every bit of playa which had been loosened by walking or driving.
The air ambulance is now airborne, slowly starting its flight by moving into the wind.
As power is applied the increased downdraft moves an even greater volume of playa dust.
The air ambulance heads towards Reno the plume heads higher and higher. Most of those in the area thought it was just another dust devil, albeit a large one.
On to the art cars.
