What's New? 2003-08

 Sunday 31 August 2003
Ranger Mickey 2002 Burning Man 2003: Journal p. 29, an excerpt: The buffet breakfast at the El Dorado (in downtown Reno) was appreciated by all. I must have drunk more than a quart of apple juice. From our sixth-story parking spot we watched a long train roll by.

Ranger Mickey 2002 Burning Man 2003: Journal p. 22, an excerpt: A groan, laughs, and cheers break out as half of the Man goes dark and one arm drops back down to his side. The Man has had a stroke. Another year, another glitch.
 Friday 29 August 2003
Ranger Mickey 2002 Burning Man 2003: Journal p. 29, an excerpt: The day started with a visit by the French Toast Gang (an LA-based group). We were treated to delicious, hot fare.... My day ended with the medical call of a participant being hit by a trailer and her very upset friend.
 Thursday 28 August 2003
Ranger Mickey 2002 Burning Man 2003: Journal p. 14, an excerpt: There are so many things we saw today that I want to mention: Lily (taken for a wild ride) and her family, people on very tall stilts, acrobats, jugglers, and more performers in Center Camp, the two train art cars we took around Black Rock City, tamales & beer camp, hot dog guy, the lawn mower art car that took my family home when Lila was tired and fussy, fireworks, the glowsticks arriving (but many broken), Sean lending me a battery pack so the el-wire braid I brought up could illuminate, and much, much more. But now I have to sleep (in the hammock).

Ranger Mickey 2002 Burning Man 2003: Journal p. 11, an excerpt: Today may be known as the 2003 day of dust. Storms blew dust over everything, repeatedly. We made it to Camp Sunscreen, where an acquaintance and her kid were. What a nice spread! They built a carpeted pen so their 16-month-old can't wander away. Their neighbor has a plastic playset and toys. The kids loved it all. Their wading pool kept the kids cool for a while. The dust flew right overhead. Late in the afternoon we headed home, exhausted.
 Tuesday 26 August 2003
Ranger Mickey 2002 Burning Man 2003: Journal p. 6, an excerpt: It's a pleasure being home again. Noisy, crazy, but full of music, art, love, and weirdness. I can do without the long lines at the café and the Porta-Potties, but other than that "it's all good" in Black Rock City.
 Monday 25 August 2003
Ranger Mickey 2002 Burning Man 2003: Journal p. 2, an excerpt: The day is spent with the kids playing in the combined shade [structure]. Lila has a peer, Saffron, so she's happy. Isaac plays along, but I hope older kids arrive. Just before sunset, after I use my old MSR stove to cook up mac and cheese, eDave takes us for a playa tour in his "tree" art car.
 Sunday 24 August 2003
Ranger Mickey 2002 Burning Man 2003: Journal p. 1, an excerpt: We leave the city at 1030 and arrive in Reno, 220 mi. later, about three hrs later... After 1 1/2 hrs of last-minute errands in Reno, and no buffet, we head to the playa. On the way I'm stopped by the Sheriff for going 80 mph (outside of Empire) but a smile and a Ranger shirt = only a warning. It's good to be home again. We set up camp adjacent to Kidsvile's common area, making something akin to a piazza.
 Saturday 23 August 2003
Ranger Mickey 2002 Burning Man 2003: Journal p. 1, an excerpt: We don't leave SF 'cause the 35' chute is at Twin Cities Surplus, and they close at 1000. We could go to Reno this eve, but (1) I can't find an affordable, non-fleabag hotel room and (2) we're not really packed.
