Lefty across America: 2003 - 02 - 09 (2)

January 25 -- San Francisco to Westhaven, CA

I started my journey away from the Bay Area on a chilly-for-San Franciscoans Saturday morning. It was probably in the low 50s. My destination was to some friends' home near Trinidad, CA (10 miles north of Eureka, CA).

After crossing the Golden Gate Bridge, heading north on Route 101, I managed to pull off before the Waldo Tunnel and take this nostalgic picture back at the City by the Bay.

Oh, the City I can not stop loving. I started missing her already, even though I knew I would be making one last stop back in a week.

San Francisco has been my home for the past 9 years and some. When I return, I will move to Mill Valley, near Mt. Tamalpais Park, in Marin County.

I moved out of my S.F. apartment in early January. I took this picture out its window, looking southeast.

In the foreground, you can see the Kabuki Movie Theater in a rainy-day Japantown [white rectangular bldg.); next is the City Hall Dome needle-piercing the sky; then the south Bay beyond the City; and finally the sunny San Leandro hills across the Bay in the background. A view of 20-30 miles and 2-3 micro climates, all in one picture.

This top-floor, corner apartment was a wonderful perch in Pacific Heights; above the City, with long vistas and views West, South, & East. I'll miss this San Fran dwelling of 6 years.

But I look forward to my new home and the environs in West Marin. Here's a sneak-peek.

When I return to the Bay area, I will move into a house of a friend in Mill Valley. I will be taking the in-law bedroom downstairs, with its own bathroom. And I get kitchen & general house privileges.

The picture above was taken at a spot about a 15-20 minute bike ride away from the new digs, which sits near the southwest base of Mount Tamalpais. The camera view is looking south, along the Pacific Coast line, towards the edge of San Francisco. There is Land's End in the distance, across the Golden Gate.

After the 7 hour long haul drive up 101, I reached my friends in Westhaven by dinner time, and began a relaxing 2-3 day visit with them and others in the Eureka/Arcata/Trinidad area.
