Album 1999.10.08

Several times a week, when circumstances permit, we take Isaac to a playgroup at the Collingwood Street Center. (The center is a few minutes walk away from our house.) There Isaac can play in a really big space, with children of his own age, and observe behaviors other than mama's and papa's.

Isaac loves things that sparkle, that move, and that are high up. The center's disco ball is all of these. When he sees the ball - especially when it's lighted up by the nearby spotlight and being moved by the motor - he lunges forward and makes a loud 'ba!' sound. It's a challenge just to keep him from leaping into empty space.

One of Isaac's regular watering holes at the center is the wading pool filled with strings of beads and hair curlers. The strings aren't long enough to be a choking hazard and are strong enough not to break under the abuse dealt by the babies.

It's pleasing to see some use for the multi-colored hair curlers in this blow-dry age. The kids absolutely love them, although the parents get a bit nervous when seeing the smallest curlers go into mouths of babes.

Even when replacing socks and moccasins, the wading pool holds its audience. A month ago Isaac would have burst into tears when being manipulated while trying to concentrate on something. Now he barely notices, or notices with a laugh (before he gets back to whatever he was doing).

Let's move on to the other playthings of interest at the center.
