1998 Gay Pride Parade

Every summer San Francisco celebrates the lesbian, gay, bisexual, and transexual communities. You know how everyone is a little bit Irish on St. Patricks day...? Here are thumbnails (leading to full-size images) of the happenings on Sunday 28 June 1998.

I Love SF

The excitement builds for weeks before Pride Weekend, with rainbow flags going up on lamp posts the entire length of Market Street. For at least two weeks we've seen the number of new faces grow and grow, our neighborhood restaurants and bars basking in the good business. Reservations are hard to come by.

Renewed pride is in the air. Voices more strident than usual are easily heard, and strong opinions about the format and constituency of the parade are aired in newspaper editorial columns, in handbills posted all over the neighborhood, and in grafitti. Pride flags begin to fly from houses that for the rest of the year sport none.

Then, finally, it's here. Pride morning is a cold, overcast, surprise. Whereas yesterday was a hot summer day, today is a San Francisco summer day. We dress in layers, pants over shorts, jackets over sweatshirts over t-shirts. The weather might change for the better, and we're prepared.

This year the parade starts at 1030 near Montgomery Street, and MUNI isn't up to the task of moving all of us there. Busses are jammed far beyond capacity. The underground hasn't been frequent enough, as the crowds seven deep on the platform attests. Even the restored trolley cars that run on Market Street and turn in the Castro, the 'F' line, isn't frequent enough. Many walk eastward, toward the parade start.

Just after the parade-leading Dykes on Bikes is the huge pride flag, into which the parade viewers toss spare change. It's not nearly as big as the miles-long ribbon flag I've seen in posters, but in the gusty breeze this one's a challenge. The parade starts.
