2005 Ibiza: Keflavik (KEF) to London Heathrow (LHR)

Friday 23 September 2005, continued.

It's the middle of the night; dark and disorienting. The terminal seems very small, after SFO and MSP. Memorable was our first exposure to the Icelandic language; usually we can decipher the European languages to which we're exposed.

Snyrtingar / Toilets

Later on, the first light of dawn highlights this multi-language door notice.

Neydarutgangur

This is the bar / restaurant; at the far left is the entire depth of the airport! I'm surprised by the cost. Oh, well, airport restaurants are usually expensive, aren't they?

It's time for us to re-board the same plane. Here we go, on to London!

An hour before landing everyone is woken and served a breakfast. Lila, having had such an abbreviated night of sleep, is hard to wake, and eschews the omelette. It too was tasty. (For those of you worried about Lila, Rose carries with her a small village store's worth of healthy snacks.)

We've had seating "challenges" on each leg. This time the best I could negotiate was to have one seat behind the three side-by-side seats in the row ahead. Isaac happily chose that seat, and was quickly adopted by an ersatz bubbie. He had a great flight, chatting away, being grandmothered.

A special pleasure in landing is the approach, and seeing familiar sights. Here's our first sighting of the River Thames.

the Thames!

The plane tips in a spot just perfect; we see the Millennium Dome, in Greenwich. We passed this on our {glossSub("2000 London - Greenwich", "2000 boat trip" up the Thames to the Greenwich Observatory.

Hey, look down! That's the Tower Bridge (which most mistake as the London Bridge, which is near-by). We were there on our 2003 Tower of London excursion.

Next on our wonderful approach is a good view of the London Eye Ferris Wheel, which we've always missed doing, and Parliament (with Big Ben (in St. Steven's clocktower)).

Soon we're over Buckingham Palace; memories of our tour there and the near-by Speaker's Corner come to mind. Good times, with baby Isaac...

Moments later we're over Kensington Palace, where, when the last time we toured them, were occupied by Lady Di and Prince Charles, and toddler Isaac chased after the huge swans on the grounds.

Finally we touch down at London Heathrow (LHR) and taxi to our gate. The kids enjoy the goings-on at the fire station. Then the skies open up and the rain comes down in sheets.

Can you guess who we're about to meet at London Heathrow?
