2004-12 Gran Canaria: Another Footrace With Charlie

Sunday 26 December 2004

Earlier this year we went to Charlie's Ingenio footrace; this time around he's running just on the other side of Playa del Inglés, near the Tropical.

We got there about 11.00, a half-hour before the event started with the Seniors race. We got a good spot near to the start / finish line, shown here as the runners are getting into position. There was a lot of last-minute running to the side for a sip of water, etc.

They're off! The guys in the middle have their knees over the line, whereas the guy on the right doesn't seem to have heard the starter's pistol at all. It was loud!

Here's a Czech acquaintance of ours, another person who winters at Atlantis I. It was really great seeing him again, as it might have been a couple of years since we last met.

Lila and Isaac got to see everything up-close, at knee-level. A police officer was concerned that they wouldn't behave themselves and perhaps run out in front of the runners, but they were pretty great about it all.

Here's Charlie crossing the finish line. Evidently he'd run five miles the day before with a friend and wasn't convinced that he wanted to compete today. We saw him racing home on his bicycle to fetch his yellow sneakers just a bit before the start of the race :-)

The it was time for things feminina, said the announcer. The kids were all used up with this racing silliness, and asked us to move on.

So we went to the paseo promenade between San Augustin and Playa del Inglés. Here's a panorama of the crowds and sand dunes. At the top center is the Punto Maspalomas, where the tides come from two directions, making for very treacherous swimming conditions. It was one of my favorite spots as a child.

We make it down to the climbing structure at El Inglés beach. The wind is blowing (as usual) and Lila asked to wear Isaac's new Münster jacket. The arms might be a bit long.

Yes, that's really Isaac at the top of the structure! He's at least thirty feet (ten meters) above the sand.

Little sister is starting to climb the structure too. She used to be wary of the moving structure, but now she's her usual fearlessness and gets up to about nine feet (three meters). She's really good at horizontal traverses, climbing all over the wiggling ropes.

After a time Lila wanted very much to go the extra few stops to the water's edge. The air is comfortable, but not really hot enough to overcome the cold water. Nevertheless, we get wet up to our knees.

One of my favorite pastimes at El Inglés is the really delightful paella available at the Cerveceria Frankfurt. I took this photo with the idea of using it as a desktop image for my laptops.

Back at Atlantis I Omi Marga invited us to watch a circus of the stars on German television. So, of course, we don't know any of the stars.

The kids understand enough German to get the jist of what's going on, but when it came time to animal acts, they were completely entranced.

But the kids weren't used up. I got two very sweet pleas to go back to the C. C. Yumbo playground. Isaac got himself in this position, and figured out how to get himself down.

Lila started going down the slides backwards and sideways. After a while all this physical activity took their toll, and we started for home.

But not before stopping at the fountain at the entrance. Both kids love watching the fountain go through its iterations.
