2004-02 Gran Canaria: La Cabaña Park, San Bartolomé de Tirajana

Thursday 26 February 2004 (continued)

After a busy after of cruising around Playa del Inglés on the mini-tren the family is hungry. Heinz has suggested a place with a playground for the kids, where he and Omi Marga have visited a while back.

The kids get dressed up. Lila is sporting a colorful plastic bead necklace and matching bracelet, along with a lace-trimmed top. Isaac is wearing a dress shirt, probably the one thing I packed which requires ironing (and which, of course, isn't ironed).

It's a short taxi ride to La Cabaña Park. Even though the address is listed as San Bartolomé de Tirajana, which appears on maps much further north, I would describe the place as somewhere just to the west of Playa del Inglés, just north of Tablero, just south of San Fernando. It's very close to the Aqua Sur water park, if you know where that is.

The restaurant is beautifully decorated in a rustic style of a working ranch.

Here Rose and Omi Marga pose while the kids ran amok in the playground, just out of view.

The kitchen is one of the most compelling I've seen in a long time. At left is a case filled with los carnes. In the middle is a brick oven grill, from which the beautiful smells of cooking meats and garlic waft. At night embers blow out from the chimney, delighting the kids. At bottom, going to the left, are fresh vegetables used by the kitchen.

Not for the squeamish, but there it is: los carnes. The specialties of the house include baby lamb (at left) and conejo al ajillo (rabbit, three of which are in the middle). At far left is the Argentine chorizo sausage.

We eat what the locals eat: tapas of the chorizo, skewers of lamb, shrimp and mushrooms in garlic broth, and calamari fritti instead of the dates with bacon we'd ordered, a few other things, and the conejo. Everything was excellent, and I'd eat there again in a moment.

Interestingly, I found the tapas much more typical than the main courses of meats in sauces, but we saw the latter being prepared and delivered to guests and they also looked good.

Here is six-year-old Spanish-speaking Jeremy, with Isaac and Llia on the horse in the playground. I did a bit of translating, but after a while it was unnecessary. Both Isaac and Lila communicated what they needed, and both got play time with Jeremy. (Isaac fell and hurt his cheek just before Jeremy and family left, but that was the only blemish to the evening.)

Rose and I switch off on playground duty, and I get a chance to try a créme Catalan (not particularly impressive). The view of the wine cellar is inspriring, though. Must return for a tasting, if they hold them here.

Leaving the most pleasant eating experience of the trip (thus far) we arrive at home just before the supermercado Cordillo is set to close. We pick up some water (both con and sin gas), coconut drinking yoghurt, and kiwi fruit.

Isaac decides to help the staff (seen here wearing the orange uniform) bring the display racks indoors. This he does for a quarter-hour, appropriately putting things away in the aisles. Both he and Lila each get a gift of a ball for their efforts.

We head home, but Isaac races into the Deutsche Gasthaus Atlantis for Gisela & Rainer's amazing bratkartoffel. They're absolutely exhausted, as you might be able to notice by this photograph, but resolute. They're charming, and well-behaved despite their state, and we're heading out a quarter-hour later. Isaac falls asleep before I can read him any stories, while I'm dropping my contact lenses into their evening cleanser.

Tomorrow we go shopping for frutas y verduras.
