Burning Man 2000 Center Camp Environs

Vending (the exchange of goods or services for money) is forbidden at Burning Man with two exceptions: the Center Camp Café and the Arctica ice station, shown here. You're looking at two tractor trailer trucks tastefully decorated as a huge igloo. Besides hiding any corporate logos which might have appeared on the trailers it also gives passers-by a clue as to its purpose. Long lines of folks desirous of chunks of frozen water can be found here all through the day. (I eschew foods which need refrigeration; too high maintenance.)

Our very own keepers of the pristine desert, the Earth Guardians work year-round to educate the masses about the Leave No Trace philosophy. Even the BM2K ticket mentions that this is a "pack-it-in pack-it-out event". The Earth Guardians also spend a lot of time on the playa, a year-round service to clean up after those who choose not to tidy up after themselves.

I think the Checkpoint Salon was the general information center for the participants.

The Artery is the coordinating group for the on-playa art pieces. They're out there with GPSs, noting exact placement, and helping out the artists in a myriad of ways.

If you've been reading these pages in order, by following the links at left, then you've already visited the main tent. This is what the approach looks like. Of course, I was calmly walking while I took this picture. It looked different to those folks who were sprinting to get out of the rain, or who saw it through eyes caked with wind-driven playa dust.

Radio Free Burning Man 99.5 FM - There is absolutely nothing better for the soul than to listen to several hours of the radio stations broadcasting on the playa. Great music, wonderful stories, and announcements unlike anything heard off the playa. One of these years I'll bring along some way of taping several dozen hours and burn CDs so I can take the good vibes with me, as I travel around the world. This year, as I drove away after the Burn, the last words I heard were of a teen girl calling out for some guy she'd eyed during the day to please come to the radio station to meet her, to marry her. Then the static took over and I heard nothing more.

The Burning Bell Message Center is a collection of missed connections, pleadings for particular supplies, and notes of the more dynamic events. Worth a stop at least daily.

Now we're reached the edge of the ring, beyond here is the playa. This was going to be the Stock Puppets, which was to move in sync with the daily operations of the stock market. Alas, never completed. Technical difficulties.

Now that we're here, let's stroll down the esplanade.
