1999 Africa: Gran Canaria - My Birthday

Tuesday 21 December 1999

It's my 36th birthday. We awake to a balmy morning breeze and a rainbow. The reign of terror must be over; health and happiness for all surely awaits.

I get on the phone and, after several false starts, figure out how to call Oma to let her know that we're here a week early. (It's always the trivial technological hurdles which are the most frustrating.) She's thrilled that we're in, regardless of the circumstances, and asks us to come right over. I've described her condominium, Atlantis Uno, in my 1995 travelogue.

Once there we tell her the story of illness and flight. She calls her doctor and makes an appointment for Isaac. His office is just around the corner. This was an entrance with which we became rather familiar:

We walked over to the doctor's office with the medications given to us in Casablanca, their labels in Arabic and French. The doctor looks them over and exclaims "we're not even allowed to use some of these anymore!" Rose is thrilled that we've been given near-toxic potions, but it's really not as bad as all that. We leave with more modern medications and a reasonably clean bill of health for our still-wan child.

You can see the paleness in this photo, taken in the incredibly fascinating bathroom of our room in the Hotel Rey Carlos. Isaac loved the toilet paper holder, flushing the toilet, and dropping things into the bathtub. Even his walk is weaker than we're accustomed to, and we indulge him.

It's only on tomorrow that I have the presence of mind to take along a camera to document a day with Omi Marga.
