1996 Kaua'i: The Lu'au at the Coconut Grove Plantation in Kapa'a
I'd never been to a lu'au, and I badly wanted to go.
The Coconut Plantation's lu'au had the best reputation.
We stood in line at the appointed hour, on the pretty ground, by the beach.
A conch shell was blown; the lu'au begins!
As we enter leis are placed on our necks.
The Hula begins.
Lopaka (the emcee) gave the haole (foreigners) a clue.
Different costumes for different songs.
Some guests were goaded into dancing on stage.
After a time the imu was opened and the whole pig was lifted out onto a carving table...
..divided between the tables.
A family from the midwest sat across the table.
Thank you for coming. Mahalo!
