Phil Dubois announces the investigation's end
On Thursday 11 January 1996 I received a telephone call from Dubois. With great excitement in his voice he announced that the Bill Keane, Assistant U.S. Attorney's in San Jose, had informed him that the investigation against Philip Zimmermann was dropped, and the threat of indictment that had hung over PRZ for three years was gone.
I hooped and hollared, and we shared a bit of virtual back-slapping. It had been a long effort of public education, showing support for PRZ, and remaining optimistic in the face of the ADA's mis-guided persistence. Dubois made plans to spend the weekend after next in my house; PRZ would be flying in for a conference and we'd have a celebratory get-together.
Here's how Dubois announced the end of the investigation to us.
Upon receiving this news, Philip Zimmermann posted this message to the Cypherpunks list.
After the dust cleared Dubois then posted a follow-up message.
Then I sent a message to all the folks with whom I'd shared information about the case, those folks attracted to these web pages in late 1995.
