Gulf War II (x)

 Wednesday 26 March 2003
A thousand U.S. Army paratroopers - elements of the 173d Airborne Brigade, based in Vicenza, Italy - dropped into Kurdish territory in northern Iraq and took control of a key airfield we began opening a northern front.

It's nice to hear something proactive and successful; yesterday's news was just a bit too reactive for my tastes.

Warplanes presumably from US-led forces pound frontline Iraqi positions in the north of the country just outside the Kurd-controlled town of Chamchamal today. Warplanes hit northern targets as U.S. efforts to open a second, limited front against President Saddam Hussein's forces gathered pace. (Nikola Solic/Reuters)

South Korean anti-war activists, wearing a U.S. President George W. Bush mask (R) and a costume representing an Iraqi woman (C), protest on a logo of McDonalds restaurant in Seoul today. Protesters used a truck-mounted ladder to scale the golden arches of a McDonalds restaurant and hang an anti-war banner. A statue of Iraqi President Saddam Hussein stands in the middle of an empty square in Baghdad today as a fierce sandstorm sweeps through the area. Visibility is severely reduced not only by the sandstorm but also by the pollution caused by oil set ablaze by Iraqis as a defense against US and British warplanes. (AP Photo/Jerome Delay)

U.S. Army 3rd Infantry Division troops from the A Company 3rd Battalion 7th Infantry Regiment weather the elements as a sandstorm at dusk turns the desert blood red near Karbala today. The sandstorm grounded many US-led forces bombing overflights over Iraq and slowed U.S. military progress in the area near Karbala yesterday. Rose and I are great fans of Qahwa Arabeya - Arabian coffee - sometimes called Kahwe bala Hal (coffee with cardamom). I was most interested to see Mr. Young holding what seems to be a demitasse of this strong, sweet drink.
