When you wear a kilt you've got to have some place to put the things which usually go in pants pockets. Traditionally, that'd be in the sporran, a pouch tied on the outside of the kilt, worn just below the navel.

The Utilikilt is another story; there cargo pockets are attached to each side of the garment.

At right you see a brown chap leather sporran with horse-hair tassels over an olive Kaz Kilt. This is a good, basic day sporran. Evening sporran are adorned with silver.

When I wanted to buy my first sporran, I was tempted to go with the horse-hair model. But almost everything else I collect is vintage or antique, from my house to my wristwatch. I wanted to see whether I could find an interesting, unusual sporran. I'm happy to report that I was able to track down a vintage World War One sporran issued by the Black Watch 73rd (Overseas) Battalion (Royal Highlanders of Canada), Canadian Expeditionary Force.
